Dr Lee McGowan

Dr Lee McGowan is a Senior Lecturer at the University of the Sunshine Coast. His publications include books and other stuff.

He recently retired from the International Bulldozer Throwing Circuit (a persistent niggling shoulder injury), but is better known for his efforts in restoring the native populations of Haggis and other supposed mythical creatures in northern Scotland (Unicorns *cough*). He teaches creative writing courses, including Writing the Short Story.

Writing Short Stories

We could talk about short stories all day, but we won’t. We can’t. You have other things to do. We will however make the most of our time together to learn about the makings of great stories, which is more about the filling than the crust. We’ll do some writing exercises, and if we have time, we’ll work on writing good sentences, description and when to use it, characters you can’t look way from, and other elements of short stories and their telling.

Talk and Workshop details

Talk: Writing Short Stories, how hard can it be? (Yrs 8-12)

Writing Short Stories can be hard, very difficult indeed sometimes, but this workshop will help. For beginners and experts, it's about the things we should think about and do (and not) when we're writing a short story. We'll talk and write and probably have a laugh too.
